Program Details
As technology continues to reshape the healthcare industry, there’s a growing need for professionals who can manage electronic health records (EHRs), code patient data, and ensure accuracy in healthcare documentation. Our Health Information Management (HIM) program is accredited by the Canadian College of Health Information Management, and you will learn how to assess and code patient information using Canadian coding standards and health information systems.
To build practical, hands-on skills, you’ll use EHRGo simulation software throughout the program to engage with interactive, case-based learning in a virtual healthcare setting. You’ll also train on WinRecs (Med2020) software for coding and abstracting, mirroring tools used in real-world Health Information departments.
You will also develop core competencies in medical terminology, clinical coding, privacy and confidentiality laws, healthcare statistics and epidemiology, and health data management and analytics. To support you on your path to CHIMA certification, Eastern College will cover the cost of the first National Certification Exam (NCE) sitting. Student membership with CHIMA will also be provided for the duration of your time at the college, giving you access to national resources, networking, and professional development opportunities. Our program is delivered online in a self-study format, with an 8-week internship to provide real-world experience. During the program, you can access campus support in New Brunswick at our Moncton, Fredericton, and Saint John campuses, and in Nova Scotia at our Halifax campus.
