What is a Continuing Care Assistant (CCA)?
A Continuing Care Assistant (also known as a care worker, care assistant, or support worker) cares for people who are elderly, frail, mentally ill, injured, or disabled. They help with daily tasks that clients can no longer perform independently. Continuing Care Assistants can work in a client’s home or in a care facility. In Nova Scotia, a Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) qualification is required to work as a care assistant in most healthcare environments.
Why Become a Continuing Care Assistant
Canada has a major shortage of Continuing Care Assistants (CCA). The aging population and a growing number of people with disabilities have largely contributed to this. Being a CCA is fulfilling work - it’s rewarding to hear clients and family members express gratitude and see smiles on their faces. CCAs spend a lot of time with patients, nurses, doctors, and even family members.
Program Information
As a Continuing Care Assistant student at Eastern College, you will learn the skills required to meet provincial standards and help you find a job in your chosen field. Course material is approved by the Health Association of Nova Scotia CCA Program Advisory Committee.
Students enrolled in the program receive the following certifications;
LEAP Long-Term Care Pallium Canada,
Alzheimer Disease and Other Dementia Care Course,
Standard First Aid/CPR Level C training,
Food Hygiene Course or Basic Food Safety Training (BFST),
WHMIS Awareness and
Occupational Health and Safety Act introduction.
Continuing Care Assistant - Progressive Education
Our Continuing Care Assistant – Progressive Education (CCA-PE) Program, offers a fantastic opportunity to apply your learning early through a ‘Work and Learn’ approach. Starting from week 12, students will attend classes virtually three days a week and work two days a week in the continuing care sector. You will receive employment and compensation with a partnered employer while working as a CCA in training.
Program Requirements
To enroll in the Continuing Care Assistant program, candidates must have completed Grade 12 or its equivalent. Furthermore, the following requirements are also mandatory for program admission: the Wonderlic test with a passing score of 12, a clear Criminal Record Check, a clear Vulnerable Sector Check, a current Immunization Record (based on Nova Scotia Health Authority standards) and student must meet the CCA language proficiency requirement.
